Waste and Want – Susan Strasser

Image
I skimmed this book for concepts as I do with self-help and business books. Covers recycling, re-use and sustainability before everything - and everyone – became disposal. Quilts and rag rugs, re-using jars. What’s old is new again as far as recycling goes.  #sustainability

Water Bottle Madness

Image
Who knew that water bottles would become the fashion accessory of 2024? Infused water has whatever’s leftover in the house, this week, it’s parsley, lemon and cucumber. My faves:   This Hydrapeak from TJ Maxx gets me through the day. I don’t monitor how much water I drink, otherwise, I would have one of the water bottles with measurements, which I think are great.  The 16-ounce Nalgene travels with me. It’s a solid 16 ounce but is light enough to carry.   #howdoyouhydrate

The Couple Next Door – Shari Lapena

Self-styled review:   Only for short commutes or waiting at the doctor’s office. Or skip it. Given the cliffhanger and two unexplained, possible twists, there’s an inevitable sequel built in. Skip that too.  Seeking streaming service serial fame.

My gray jeans wore out. 👖2% Elastane

I found a new pair I liked at Gap Factory online since there’s no longer Gap at 34 th Street.   After reading the reviews and assessing the size chart, I purchased a style I liked, the Mid-Rise Baby Boot Jeans with Washwell. All information would indicate that the Size 28-Size 6 would fit me best. I got the jeans, tried them on, they fit me perfectly. The next time, when I really wore them, though, they ended up sliding down almost past my hips. Why?   2% Elastane. Elastane changed the jeans market more than any other technological development, as far as I’m concerned. Jeans are like leggings now, or are actual leggings, jeggings. It’s difficult to turn back to the stiff, 100% cotton after experiencing the elastane, though many consumers do so, for a host of reasons, such as fashion, sustainability and fit. I returned the jeans and purchased the same pair, Size 27-Size 4. While they were initially tight, two hours later they fit perfectly. Gap is a mass brand. The sizing is part o

Reseller Secrets

Image
#freeganfinds #resellers Here’s why this cheaply made freegan clothing item sells:   This short sleeve black turtleneck is a 90’s throwback. Olivia Rodrigo was recently seen in a similar style. It’s velvet, the marketplace likes textures and patterns and is less concerned about quality since fashion moves fast. The design is pretty good for a cheapie. IRL, it’s in good condition. The sizing is not too big, not too small. While trendy, it’s versatile to wear. Bargain price, good until it’s out of style.

The Price of Peas

Image
Last week, the price of fresh peas at Trader Joe's was $4.49 for 10 ounces. The price at Wegmans for fresh shelled 8 ounces was $2.79. It used to be much less expensive at Trader Joe’s. Cherry picking at different grocery stores is the only way to get the best prices. It's always been a complicated landscape for food shoppers. “Trader Joe's is the cheapest.” and “Whole Foods is the most expensive.” doesn’t always hold true. Whole Foods has their store brand and their weekly sales. Stores have different specialties, different sources of distribution. Whole Foods is expensive around the country but one of the few games in town for New Yorkers without a car. Being the home cook that I am in my heart, Wegmans is the king of the pre-chop.   Their chopped onions are finely minced, not just a coarse chop like Trader Joe’s. The management of their Astor Place store is so present, rare for New York City, it might be worth a price differential. Green Juice Fresh Press 15.2 Fl.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, Audible Audiobook , Matthew Perry (Author, Narrator)

Image
I caught Matthew Perry’s memoir on audio. Not a big Friends fan. Having read plenty in the genre of addiction, I’ll comment on one thing. Matthew Perry mentions that he had an aversion to drinking water. It was always a soft drink or something else. Ironic, drinking water, the number one tenet of any Hollywood health plan, as it should be. There are ways around drinking water. Water-based fruits and vegetables, seltzer, ice cubes, etc. When you’re stuck, literally or figuratively, it’s a reminder to incorporate the indirect or the counterintuitive, when you can’t go directly through, to find the way forward. The quote is from his therapist.   #rip

Old Plant, New Shoots

Image
Breaking news on my Pothos. This Old Pothos, bought at a Plant Estate Sale, has new shoots!   As much as Pothos is on the can’t kill list of plants, this one was a mess at first. Once again, I didn’t do a re-pot, put it in a bowl, simply trimmed all the brown overgrown bits, untangling the vines, watered it, gave it a little plant food and a new clip light for more sunlight exposure. Rejuvenated with just a little care. #houseplants #planttwitter #pothos
