If you give those old-fashioned Orange Slices candy the side-eye ...

Image
(but eye them nevertheless), then this post is for you. Have you seen this relatively new product, Solely Organic Whole Fruit Gummies? Pricey, found them at CVS, $5.79 for a net weight bag of 3.5 ounces, with 5 bags of gummies at 0.7 ounces each.   So I bought the Organic Mango & Orange version on sale with coupons at $3.56. The bags are small and so are the brownish gummies.   They contain three ingredients:   Organic Mango, Natural Orange Extract, and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).   To get to the taste: they are pleasant enough, with a bitter orange oil after taste. But soon enough, one little bag becomes two, and they prove to be a little addictive. Would buy again but only on sale. The guava would be cool to try. (not a paid endorsement)

Found these limited buy, seasonal poblanos at Trader Joe’s.

Cool summer produce isn’t limited to Farmer’s Markets. Shopping the summer overflow at regular, schmegular supermarkets is one of my favorite things. So are poblano and shishito peppers. #traderjoes

Easy Mushroom Coffee Hack:

Image
Haven’t tried mushroom coffee yet?  Instead, you can place a few drops of Organic Mushroom Complex liquid extract into your coffee. It’s either undetectable or adds a little earthiness to the brew. Bonus tip:  extend your summer iced coffee experience with coconut water.  #mushroomcoffee 🍵

Two Pastry Chef Auto Bios 🍲

Image
Spiced – Dalia Jurgensen Dalia Jurgensen’s breezy book is about prepping food, man. Learning the ropes. Keeping her station clean.   Maximizing her opportunities for growth to become a pastry chef in NYC kitchens.   Her family background and relationships are here but this book is about developing skills.   Anyone thinking about entering the culinary industry would benefit from this book. The ethos behind her desserts, natural, not too much sugar, such as banana tarte tatin, sounds delish. Our Lady of Perpetual Hunger – Lisa Donovan Lisa Donovan’s book is much loftier, with more feeling and community than pastry. She entered the culinary industry using skills learned through her Mexican immigrant family on her mother’s side. She’s become known from a hyper local scene in a rising Nashville.   While she drinks a lot of artisanal, organic Kool-Aid (Saint Bourdain!), hers is a tale worth telling. These two very different ladies are brass tacks with heart. ...

major motion picture has left part of their set behind.  🤣 This signage will be donated to Hoboken Thrift since a Stevens student might want it for their dorm.   The thrift could use it as one of their creative displays.    #hoboken #reuse

An Informal Chat About Jarred Arrabbiata Sauce

Image
Jarred Arrabbiata sauces has been having a moment for a while now. I have dabbled in this trend even converting it to curry sauce.   Italian tomato sauce with a hot kick, it’s an irresistible addition to eggplant parm and pastas. Not here to break down the hype, just recommending a few brands from my Arrabbiata sauce journey. I’ll start with the lead:   Carbone Arrabbiata sauce. My overall favorite of the non-definitive number of brands I have tried. When this supermarket bottled sauce goes on sale for $7.99, it’s a real deal. Rao's Homemade Arrabbiata Sauce Spicy Tomato Sauce & Pasta Sauce gets the most play. I preferred the Carbone. Maybe the Carbone is less oily?   Not sure, but Carbone, in the jar with the cute illustration, is the crave-worthy one. The less pricey runner up is from Target:   Signature Arrabbiata Pasta Sauce - Good & Gather.   At $5.99, a deal.   But good luck finding it because it wasn’t available during my last Target run....
