Blogger Exclusive: The Power of the Micro

Opinion!

A local run-off election that broke 692 – 529.  That means a total of 1,221 people casting a vote with over 6,000 eligible registered voters. The low turnout is another predictable story, built into the calculation of all sides.  In this case, the winner, with 692 votes, is now in the position to knock over the entire game board of the opposition with the added opportunity of possibly elevating the agenda of his constituents in the future. All because of a difference of 163 votes.

There’s power in the Micro, meaning, while worldwide fame is not possible, developing a small constituency or audience is. Small number of supporters. Small audiences. Small wins. They are possible. Know their power. Because your enemies can outclass you in this regard, before you know it, making small, insidious wins across the country on school boards and local governments. As an old Russian neighbor of mine used to say, cue the accent, evil lurks in small places.

Don’t think you have to have a lot of Instagram followers either, because followers don’t necessarily translate into measurable action. Followers don’t necessarily buy the product or pull the lever. They are exactly that, followers.  The machine got beat, this time around. What an inspiration. Make your audience, whenever and wherever you can. Think small.
