A California Date Shake

One of Trader Joe’s many charms:  California cuisine offerings like hot sauces, nuts, dried fruits.  But what inspired this date shake is their popularity at the East Village’s Superiority Burger, NYC. Kind of duping popular recipes helps when your budget doesn’t include going out to eat a lot.  Also, it’s an opportunity to healthy a recipe up.

The traditional date shake uses oranges but Meyer lemon might do nicely. If this recipe with oranges gets too cloyingly sweet, add lemon and more salt.  Watch the recipe go zestier.  I broke out the Maldon Sea Salt for this one.

Sounds like the date shake was invented in the Coachella Valley, which we now know from the TikTokers as their favorite or most detested but hilarious music festival.  Maybe stay home and make a date shake. Call it The Dateschella.

#dateshake

1 Cup Almond Milk

Juice and some zest from an Orange

1 teaspoon Peanut Butter

1 Cup Vanilla Ice Cream – my choice:  Oatly or Whole Foods plant-based, or
1 cup Vanilla Yogurt.

5 Dates – Trader Joe’s or a brand like Joolies Organic Medjool Dates, chopped and seeded. There are many options, just highlight and right click to open:  https://amzn.to/4nZS4yu

Collagen Powder

Half a cup Oatmeal

A splash of Vanilla

Sea Salt

Lemon – optional

Blend with a little ice.

Note to self:  Dates are a good way to sweeten and thicken smoothies.
