Roberta’s Frozen Pizza, the Famous Original - With Broccoli Rabe

Frozen pizza isn’t what it used to be. Like waist packs for the festival circuit, they’ve gone hipster, posh and luxe.

Encountered the Roberta’s Frozen Pizza line on sale at Whole Foods.  My choice, around $10.41, the Famous Original, is topped with tomato, mozzarella, parmigiano, caciocavello, oregano and chili flakes. Handcrafted wood fired frozen pizza from a collective of friends in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Sourdough crust.

You can’t get more hipster than that.

Especially with my addition.  I had made a big batch of broccoli rabe the night before, trimmed, steamed, spiced and sauteed in olive oil, the perfect healthy topping for this pizza. And topping one of my favorite lists (besides the S&P), the ANDI:

“The Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI) list, ranks foods from 1 to 1,000 based on their micronutrient content per calorie (H=N/C). Top-tier foods include mustard greens, kale, and watercress.”

What’s more, the broccoli rabe was relatively affordable, at $3.99 a bunch, at Whole Foods.  Baked at 445 degrees, preheated oven, with the broccoli rabe topping for five minutes.  The broccoli rabe, along with a dash of pepper and a little aforementioned olive oil, proved to be the perfect counterpart to the rich pizza.

My go-to frozen pizza, when on sale, is the Cappello's Almond Flour Thin Crust Cheese Pizza, Gluten Free, Frozen Pizza, 11oz. I pretend it’s Basile’s YouTube-famous White Pizza, healthier, but, of course, it can be doctored up to be similar to the Basile’s White Pizza:  https://amzn.to/4fByswL

Roberta’s Frozen Pizza version with kale (topping the ANDI list), the Pizza Baby Sinclair Frozen, 9.7 Ounce, the veggie already included:  https://amzn.to/3Tqb5ig

It’s a whole topic – what are your favorite additions to doctor up pizzas or frozen foods?
