To:   Millennials, Xers, Gen Jones Re:   Your Inheritance Your family’s inexplicable coin or Lionel train or Villeroy & Boch or Oneida or Chandelier or Salt and Pepper shakers or weird plates, cat colony, or pitchers, dolls, Hummel figurines’ collection getting you down?    There’s an outlet…for your grief:   the Millennial Inheritance Community @NickFoxRadio

This little light of mine…

Image
I purchased the Leviton Vintage Lead Crystal 3 Way Glass and Brass lamp at an estate sale for $8.00.   Needed a lamp for the bedside table.   The lower crystal portion of the lamp lights with a button and the bulb at the shade also lights with 3 settings.   It hit the design aesthetic I was looking for – small but taller in height so the light would reflect against the wall. Creating even more light.   I had tested it at the estate sale to make sure it was working. The bulb worked too. The local thrift store often has lamp shades, but with odd hours, I went to Home Depot, and got a lampshade, on the smaller side at 10”. This one, for $21.74, was at least part linen. I removed the (functional) harp for this lampshade but am saving it for resale. The internet says it’s ok to remove the harp but you can go ahead and have a long disagreement about it, if you like. The handyman will do a double check when next here.   I brought in the project for $29.74. ...

Freegan-ing an End Table: A Small Space Problem Solved

Image
The end table is an industrial-style open-cubby nightstand or end table, featuring a natural finish wood box nested inside a thin black metal minimalist frame. It epitomizes Dupe Nation. There are versions of it across the spectrum from CB2 to West Elm to Bed Bath and Beyond to Walmart. This version resembles the Industrial Modern Iron and Wood Nightstand End Table from Woodwaves at $546.00.   The freegan-ed one is definitely on the lower end with nails on the top surface, unless it was built wrong, which is a possibility.   I was looking at a few of the plant stands around $60.00 to $80.00 on Wayfair.   That would require internet shopping, tax, cardboard, shipping, more carbon footprint and assembly.   Without looking, the plant stands are probably made of some hybrid of wood and plastic, just like the plethora of cotton polyester blend clothes around. I saved expenses, shipping, stress on myself and stress on the planet. And an end table proved to be a bette...

Solar Power: Outdoor Waterproof Solar Lanterns

Image
My first foray into solar…worked!   Overdone, overwrought string lights are not for me. I tried these neat, nifty solar lanterns instead. Out of the box, turn them on in the sun, turn them off, then on at night. Good to be here during the day, following the light, because the sun rotates around my backyard, re-positioning them is beneficial.   We’ll see about durability.   Right now, it’s 💖.   This small project makes me just so much more ambitious with solar than these lanterns.   Solar Lanterns Outdoor Waterproof: 2 Pack Hanging Solar Lights for Outside Patio Porch Garden Tabletop Decor - Bright LED Warm White Solar Powered Lighting - Unique Gardening Gifts for Mom.

Healthy Vidalia Onion Dip

Image
Healthy Vidalia Onion Dip Who doesn’t love onion dip, a favorite American classic that belongs to everyone?  We grew up with it.  Here’s a sweet‑savory Vidalia-onion-forward dip with fresh ingredients. Vidalia onions peak April–August, a short season, when their signature sweetness is at its highest thanks to the low‑sulfur Georgia soil. This is the moment when they caramelize best. The more you know:  The Vidalia name is legally protected and the onions are only grown in 20 Georgia counties. With these versions, you can count on fresh caramelized Vidalias and simple ingredients — no preservatives, nothing engineered.   Royalty Free Image. Base Version with Greek Yogurt 2 large Vidalia onions, thinly sliced 2–3 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp salt 1 container Fage 2% Greek yogurt or equivalent Method Slowly caramelize onions in olive oil and salt until deep gold and jammy (20–25 minutes during peak season; off‑season can take 3...

The Rise of “Fake Jeans” (a.k.a. Printed Denim Sweatpants)

Image
It’s sweatpants masquerading as jeans, folks. The gold standard, the Rag & Bone Miramar denim sweatpants, were on sale at the Nordstrom Anniversary, the nSale, (still going on now!) but I could not justify the price point. Or drag myself to the Rag & Bone store in the Meatpacking district to try them on before buying them. My new $50 Gap pair is a low‑risk entry point to the trend of denim sweatpants. I could justify getting the similar, lower-end Gap pair given how casual my lifestyle is now.   Post‑pandemic comfort dressing, designer irony, travel practicality. The look, the comfort, the trend — without the $200+ price tag. Popularized around 2022–2023, they’re no longer a trend, they’re a category. The “3‑D print” effect is what makes these pants look like jeans from a distance. Rag & Bone’s version is more dimensional — the print has depth and shadowing that tricks the eye. Gap’s version is flatter but still convincing enough for casual wear. While “3-D print”...
